Properties of Ultrasound Waves | Sound | Class IX

1. Ultrasonic wavescan travel easily in solid and liquid but not in gases.This is because the intensity of ultrasonic waves decrease fast with propagation in gases.
2. Good Directionality: Due to high frequency of ultrasound, its wavelength is small. Therefore, these waves do not bend easily and therefore move along a straight line. It is because of this property that these waves are used for scaning objects and making their image. The imaging phenomenon also, depends on the fact that these waves can travel through opaque objects.
3. High power: Due to high frequency, the energy possessed by these waves is high. therefore, if these waves are focussed at a point, a high power is generated a that point which is used in breaking and cutting objects.
