The Root System | Class VI

Roots of a plant grow inside the soil. There are two types of root systems in plants—taproot system and fibrous root system.

Taproot system:When a seed germinates, a root emerges from the seed called radicle. This is the main root, from which root branches emerge. The main root grows deep into the soil. Such a root system is called taproot system and is seen in plants like bean, mango and pea.

Fibrous root system:In plants like maize, a cluster of roots arises from the base of the stem. The root formed first, dies. The cluster of roots is thin and fibrous. There is no main root. They form the fibrous root system and spread out in the soil giving support to the plants. Wheat, maize, millet, etc., have this type of root system.
